Vipava ‒ The Lanthieri mansion, a Baroque gem

The greatest pearl of artistic heritage in Vipava is the Lanthieri mansion, which was probably
built on the site of a formerly fortified bailey (economic and administrative centre) of the
lower Vipava castle. The Lanthieris obtained from the provincial prince this strategic and rich
landed estate located not far from the border of two Habsburg lands already as third-
generation residents of Carniola and second-generation residents of Gorizia. Since the castle
was the family’s residential palace, the Lanthieris wanted it to reflect the wealth, education,
and reputation of their lineage. Thus, after serving as its administrators for decades, the
Lanthieri family finally bought the landed estate and began the construction of the new
mansion. The latter stands today in the town’s main square, leaning back against the largest
source of the Vipava River. It is impressive not only in size but also for the grand façade with
a balustraded balcony supported by stone brackets, above which appears the coat of arms of
the Lanthieri family. The building was given a magnificent new facework in the second half
of the 18th century, allegedly by the renowned Gorizia architect Michele Bon. The Baroque-
style renovation of the mansion gave it an ornately painted staircase and hallways; and the
building probably had several kitchens. Some pieces of furniture nowadays preserved at the
Lanthieri palace in Gorizia are believed to have been part of the furnishings of the Vipava
mansion, as can be inferred from their dimensions.
Although the place was, after the death of the last member of the Lanthieris in the beginning
of the 20th century, used primarily as a military headquarters for nearly 100 years, its artistic
value is now acknowledged and the mansion has been declared a monument of national
importance. Amid uncertainty regarding its restoration, the building was included among the
world treasures to be preserved as listed by the international organisation World Monument
Fund.
